The Opium War • Opium War- • Britain sold Opium a drug to Chinese • Chinese Gov. outlaws the sale of opium • Britain fights a war with China for the right to sell opium • China loses • China pays Britain an indemnity for losses in war • Britain gains extraterritoriality or right to live under their own laws in China

  3. II. Taiping Rebellion • Qing dynasty was in decline • Lots of corruption and abuses, bad taxes • Taiping Rebellion was the worst peasant uprising in history 1850-1864 • Lost Taiwan in Sino-Japanese War

  4. III. Reform and the Fall of the Qing Dynasty. • GuangXu tried to reform China with his Hundred Days of Reform • Tried to modernize laws • Conservatives fought it and it failed • Open Door Policy-policy to keep Chinese trade open to everyone equally

  5. III. Reform and the Fall of the Qing Dynasty • Boxer Uprising- 1899 group of martial artists tried to kick westerners out • Failed uprising • Forced China to do more Western reforms • By the early 1900’s reformers called for a republic

  6. III. Reform and the Fall of the Qing Dynasty cont. • Sun Yixan-became president of the New Chinese republic • Had his three principals of the people: • Nationalism • Democracy • Economic security (livelyhood)
