  1. Evaluation question 5 Who is the audience for you media product?

  2. Target audience • The audience for my music magazine would be males that are aged seventeen-twenty two years old. They would be working/middle class of the social grades C1, C2 and D. (This is the reason for my magazine being quite cheap at £2.00 in appose to existing magazines of the same genre). A typical audience member would listen and enjoy indie, alternative and electronic rock music/artists and be very passionate about their specific music taste.

  3. Pre-production research • As part of my planning process, I used ‘Survey Monkey’ to produce a questionnaire that I then sent out to people within my target audience range to complete. These results allowed me to get their opinions on colour, titles, content etc…in reference to my music magazine product. The benefit of having opinions of people that matched my target audience criteria meant that I could trust and use the majority opinion when making decisions about the production of my product. In order to analyse the results from my questionnaire, I produced a graph using ‘Excel’ for each set of data that clearly showed me the preferred answer/options. This quickly allowed me to see what colours I should use, what content I should include and what title I should name the masthead as in order to appeal to my correct target audience. I decided that I would use all of the feedback from my questionnaire to make decisions during production as I felt that the results were reliable and matched the genre/magazine conventions. For example; the colours red, white and black showed as most popular and these colours are conventionally used as the house style colours within rock magazines such as NME and Q. Therefore I could use these results to attract my target audience.

  4. Example This is an example of a typical target audience member. He is a male young adult probably aged 21/22 years old. The male is dressed in black which is a typical colour associated with the rock genre of music. He also has tattoos and piercings which is stereotypical of a male rock listener. He is obviously interested and enjoys body modification and his appearance suggests that he would listen to rock music. This male probably has a part-time/small wage full-time job and is in the social grades C1, C2 or D. Facial hair e.g. a beard is also conventional of a typical male rock listener. This male may aspire to be in a rock band of his own or work in some sort of creative media industry. For example; art, tattoo artist, song writer. A typical audience member may still be in higher education or have a job like this male may have and be studying creative subjects or specifically music, as rock listeners are often passionate about their music.
