  2. The Patient • 73 year old patient • African American • Has many medical issues including • MGUS – causes an increase in cancers esp. leukemia and lymphoma • Markers for Lupus • Osteoarthritis • High BP • Sjogren’s Syndrome • Penicillin and Sulfur allergies

  3. The Lesion • Large, dark red-brown • Plaque-like • Localized on the palate • Appears • Flat • Well-defined • Only in the epithelium

  6. Differential Diagnosis • Melanoma • Ethnic Markings • Non-malignant Melanotic Macule

  7. Patient Dialogue • Have you ever noticed any other lesions like this on other parts of your body? • Are you taking any new medications? • When was the last time you saw your physician? • When was the last time you visited a dentist?

  8. Patient Diagnosis/Treatment • After biopsy at KU Medical Center, decided lesion was not malignant and possibly an ethnic marking. However, we as well as her regular physicians, want to check its measurements every 6 months to a year. • Patient does have 2 ethnic markings on either side of her palate.
