(37:35) Sheol = death • Joseph is sold to Potiphar, captain of Pharaoh‘s bodyguards
Survey of Genesis: Patriarchal History • Joseph (37:1-50:26) • Judah and Tamar (38:1-30) • Judah takes a wife from the Canaanites, Shua (38:1-4) • Her first son was Er; next two were Onan and Shelah • Judah took a wife for Er, Tamar (38:6-11) • Er did evil and God took him (7) • Onan was to take her for his wife and raise and offspring for his brother but he refused (wasted his seed) • This was displeasing to God and so God took his life (10) • Judah worries about losing his last son so he sends Tamar back to her father until Shelah is of age (probably not intending to keep his promise)
Survey of Genesis: Patriarchal History • Joseph (37:1-50:26) • Tamar tricks Judah to get and offspring (38:12-26) • After Judah's wife dies (12), Judah’s daughter-in-law, Tamar, dresses as a temple prostitute to get pregnant by Judah since he had not given her to Shelah as he promised (13-14) • Judah does not have a goat by which to pay so she asks for his signet ring, cord, and staff as a pledge but could not find her later (15-23) • Three months later Judah is informed that Tamar "has played the harlot” and Judah says she is to be burned(24); • Tamar sends the things she got from Judah and says it is the owner of those things that is the father (25); Judah says she is more righteous than he. He did not keep his agreement with her (26) • The levirate marriage allowed for the father in law to provide the child if the brother in laws did not

Survey of Genesis: Patriarchal History • Joseph (37:1-50:26) • Joseph interprets Pharaoh's dreams (41:1-36) • Pharaoh had dreams two full years later (41:1) • Seven fat cows from the Nile eaten by seven skinny cows • Seven plump ears of grain on a single stalk then seven ears of thin scorched by the east wind which swallowed up the seven plump • Pharaoh's spirit was troubled so called his magicians and wise men • Pharaoh told them his dreams but they could not interpret them • The cupbearer remembers Joseph as the interpreter of his dream and the baker's accurately

After three days Joseph keeps Simeon and sends the others back to bring Benjamin. • Brothers discuss that their problems are due to how the treated their brother, Joseph • One of them finds his money returned in his sack while feeding the donkeys, later all find their money in their sacks of grian • They tell their father, Jacob, what happened in Egypt • Jacob does not want Benjamin to go

He overtakes them and they tell him to search and he finds it in Benjamin's sack • They tore their clothes and returned to the city and bowed down before Joseph in fear • Joseph tells them they have done a bad deed and besides did they not know he "can practice divination." (44:15).

Survey of Genesis: Patriarchal History • Joseph (37:1-50:26) • Joseph's Meets His Brothers (42:1-45:28) • Joseph makes his identity known (45:1-8) • Joseph could not contain himself any longer, sent everyone out but his brothers and crying told them who he was • Egyptian overheard the weeping and Pharaoh heard about it • Brothers were very surprised • Joseph tells them not to be grieved or angry with themselves (5-7) • because God sent him before them to preserve life • the famine still has five years to go • to keep them alive by a "great deliverance" • it was not them who sent him to Egypt but God • God made him lord of Pharaoh's household and ruler of Egypt
Survey of Genesis: Patriarchal History • Joseph (37:1-50:26) • Joseph's Meets His Brothers (42:1-45:28) • Joseph arranges for his family to live in Egypt (45:9-28) • Joseph tells them to go bring their father (Jacob/Israel) and all his clan to live in the land of Goshen as the famine will continue but in Egypt there will be plenty for them • They wept together and talked • Pharaoh offers them wagon from Egypt to use to bring their families as Pharaoh was happy for Joseph • Joseph gives them changes of garment but to Benjamin he gave five changes and 300 pieces of silver

Survey of Genesis: Patriarchal History • Joseph (37:1-50:26) • Israel & Family Settle in Egypt (46:1-47:12) • Jacob & his family settle in land of Goshen (46:28-47:12) • Five brothers presented to Pharaoh and he makes them feel welcomed • Pharaoh asks their occupation. They say shepherds and that the pasture land in Canaan was not good because of the famine • Pharaoh tells Joseph that his family can have the land in Goshen and if there are some capable men, put them in charge of his livestock • Jacob is presented to Pharaoh and blesses Pharaoh at the age of 130 years. They settled in the land of Ramses as Pharaoh ordered and they had enough food according to their little ones (1876 BC) • Separation from Egyptian may have been sought by Joseph because of their idolatry and staying faithful to the covenant

Joseph receives one more portion than his brothers

Due to the killing of those associated with the rape of Dinah. Simeon will receive inheritance in Judah (see Jos. 19:1) • Judah - father's sons will bow down, Judah is a lion's welp (Ez. 19:5-7; Mic. 5:8), scepter will not depart from Judah nor the rulers staff until Shiloh comes (means until he comes to whom it belongs), to him (Jesus) will be the obedience of the peoples. (Shiloh means "rest bringer" per Smith)
