Survey of Genesis: Patriarchal History • Jacob (28:10-36) • Approximate dates of Jacob - ~2006-1859 B.C. • Jacob's Ladder Dream (28:10-22) • Jacob departs from Beersheba for Haran to escape from Esau • God reconfirms His covenant with Jacob that He made with Abraham and Isaac (first of seven revelations to Jacob) • Descendents like dust • God will keep him wherever he goes & bring him back to this land • The land on which he lies will be his and his descendents • Place of the dream was called Bethel which means house of God (Luz) • He builds and alter and pours oil as an offering • First recorded vow in the bible (20-22) • Jacob will be absent from Canaan for twenty years

Survey of Genesis: Patriarchal History • Jacob (28:10-36) • Jacob's Sons Kill the Men of Shechem (34:1-31) • Dinah is raped by Shechem (same as town), son of Hamor the Hivite • Shechem wants her as a wife so Hamor asks Jacob for his son to marry Dinah (34:23 gives an idea why Abram & Isaac lied when confronted by powerful people) • Jacob's sons are angry about the disgrace so the people in the area offer them a place to stay in their land and to intermarry and Shechem offers any bride price • The brothers hatched a plan (Simeon and Levi) • Demand the men be circumcised as part of the bride price • On the third day when in a lot of pain the brothers kill them and loot their belongings (other brothers help loot)

After 20 years, Jacob left for home & was overtaken by Laban near Mahanaim. • Jacob went to Hama (Hamath), Aleppo, and finally Haran.
