RIBOSOMES • sites of protein synthesis • assembled in the nucleus • made of protein and RNA ribo nucleic acid
Ribosomes • occur in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes
Consists of a small and a larger subunit. Consists of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and some 50 structural proteins. Ribosomes
Some ribosomes cluster on the endoplasmic reticulum (bound). Some ribosomes are present freely in the cytoplasm. Ribosomes
Ribosomes • The free ribosomes tend to make proteins for use inside the cytoplasm • Bound ribosomes tend to make proteins to be secreted by the cell or used in membranes. • There structure is exactly the same. • The cell can change them around as the requirements of metabolism change.
Ribosomes • For example, cells like the pancreas which make lots of proteins have many bound ribosomes. • Eukaryotic ribosomes are slightly larger than prokaryotic ones.
Ribosomes • The difference in size of prokaryote and eukaryote ribosomes is of great importance in medicine. • Certain drugs e.g tetracycline, streptomycin which are used as antibiotics can paralyse the bacterial ribosomes while leaving our ribosomes untouched.
