To learn how to take notes… Throughout this ppt, the first slide will be similar to what ppt slides will look like throughout the year when we take notes; the second slide will have the same information, but in abbreviated form and show you what your notes should look like. Before moving to the 2nd slide, we’ll discuss what information is important and should be written down.

Note Taking Basics • Begin each note taking session on a fresh page. • Start by writing down the date and topic. • Do not try to write down everything the teacher says. • Record important information such as: • Headings • Facts • Key words/Vocabulary words • Mark important facts or main ideas with an asterisk or star or underline them.

  5. Abbreviations & Symbols • Use abbreviations to save time! • Some commonly used abbreviations and symbols are: • cf (compare) • ie (that is) • ex or eg(for example) • w/ (with) • w/o (without) • b/c (because) • &, + (and) • = (equals, is)

  7. Eliminating & Shortening • To save time, consider eliminating vowels in your note taking, when you’re sure it won’t be confusing. • You should also use sentence fragments instead of whole ideas. As long as you know what you’re talking about, that’s all that matters. • Eliminate unnecessary words and punctuation. • Example: Use frags., symbls, & tke out vwls

Hints • Write clearly, and leave space between ideas in case you need to add information later or so you can go back and add page numbers, examples, etc. • Leave space in the left margin to write questions you may have. • Read over your notes as soon as you can after class. If there is anything you don't understand or left out, ask the teacher or a classmate. • Keep in mind, not all the important information will be on the board, so you should also take notes during class discussion.
