  1. Trident Refit Facility LEAN Case Study: PEB Initiatives

  2. Problem Statements • Too much time is spent by production personnel ordering and stocking parts for pre-expended items. • Production personnel do not use everything on the packing list, resulting in excess material.

  3. Goals • To have the Supply Department take control of the replenishment of all small shop supported Pre-Expended Bins (PEB). • To provide exact units required in lieu of quantity unit packs. • To expedite the issuing of materials for recurring requirements closer to production personnel.

  4. Significant Changes • Supply Department has taken control of PEB's in Shops 38A, 71A, 17A and 67H. • Supply Department "inventories" shop PEB's by visual High/Low indicators. • Supply checks for “unit of issue” changes thru FED Log or SBC program. • Restocking is performed "as needed" not "just because“ and inventory adjustments will be made when items are ordered/received.

  5. Significant Changes • Received items will be input into the SBC program to update the PEB. • In Shop 71A,key personnel havecontrol ofsupply cage. Not everyone has access. • Mechanics have the parts they need, when they need them.( No"panic ordering")

  6. Things still to be done • Identify PEB's in all shops. • Inventory and turn in all excess material. • Remove/delete items not considered to be PEB’s. • Other shops currently being considered are 67G, 64A, 25D, 26B and 51B.

  7. Barriers to Overcome • Manning restraints – insufficient personnel to man future initiatives, may cause an increased workload for PEB and Admin personnel. • Shops, not yet under the initiative, are required to do their own inventory and communicate to supply the items that need to be added or deleted.

  8. Lessons Learned • Shops need to separate and group like items to facilitate inventory. • Shops need to identify fast moving items to allow Supply Dept. to establish accurate and reasonable High/Low limits for areas identified.
