  3. Set Up Details Chart Turn to p. 37 – Review the “Reading Skill: Drawing Conclusions” instructions. Open your journal and set up your chart. In your journal, continue your chart:Reading Journal:“Harrison Bergeron” As you read, you will pause at the end of each page for 5 minutes and record at least 3 details about what you just read and your reactions. When you are done with the story, write about your overall conclusions about the story “Harrison Bergeron.”

  4. Set Up Details Chart Turn to p. 38 – The sub will read this page At end of p. 38: Take 5 minutes. Record at least 3 details about what you just read and your reactions. What do you notice about this world? When does it take place? What is new about this America? How is everyone equal? What do you notice about the constitution? Why is that weird? What do these things tell you about these characters and their world?

What do you notice about George? Why is he suffering? How smart is Hazel? What are these handicaps? What are the ballerina’s wearing? Why? What do these things tell you about these characters and their world? What else do you notice?...

What do you notice about George’s feelings about their world? What do you notice about the announcer? What do you notice about Hazel’s attitude toward him? What do these things tell you about these characters and their world? Why does the picture go upside down, sideways, upside down, and right side up again? What’s your thoughts/questions/reactions to these things?...

What do you notice about George and Hazel’s reaction? Your reaction to their reaction? What else do you notice…

  9. BIG QUESTION! Think-Pair-Share. THINK (8 minutes): Write your overall conclusions for this story. Write some ideas about what you think Vonnegut is trying to say in this story. What is his point about: Equality? Perfection? Competition? Individuality? Conformity? Etc. What is the lesson you think he is trying to teach us? Record in your “Overall Conclusions”.... PAIR (5 minutes): Share your thoughts with a classmate next to you. Compare your ideas. SHARE (10-15 minutes): Share your thoughts with the class – what do you think it all MEANS??!! We’ll continue and discuss next class. Time left over? Work on your 1-pager and/or reading project!
