Domestic Violence • A learned pattern of mean, violent, or abusive behaviors used to exert power and control over another individual. These behaviors can be husband to wife, wife to husband, parent to child, child to parent, boyfriend to girlfriend, girlfriend to boyfriend, girlfriend to girlfriend, or boyfriend to boyfriend.
Physical abuse • Hitting • Pushing • Kicking • Restraining • Punching • Hair-pulling • Throwing things • Spitting • Strangling • Using weapons
Emotional Verbal mental abuse • Yelling/Cursing • Name calling • Isolation • Mind games • Cheating • Lying • Violation of privacy • Embarrassing • Stalking • Excessive jealousy
Sexual abuse • Rape • Sexual assault • Harassment • Any unwanted touch • Sexual comments • Rumors • Blackmail
Digital abuse • Excessive text/phone calls • Posting negative messages on social networking sites • requesting/sending explicit photos • Tracking using technology • Rumors/blackmail

Why stay? • Statistically it takes the victim 6-9 break ups before they permanently end the relationship with their abuser • Fear of retaliation • Financial instability/little to no resources • Abuser threatening with custody • Religious beliefs • Lack of support system • Afraid to disclose abuse due to shame, embarrassment, and threats
Top ten red flags While there are many warning signs of abuse, here are the most common: • Checking your cell phone or email without your permission • Constant put downs • Extreme jealousy or insecurity • Explosive temper • Financial control • Isolating you from friends/family • Mood swings • Physically hurting you in any way • Possessiveness • Telling you what to do
How can you help? • Listen without judgment • Offer support • Believe them • Tell them it’s not their fault • Encourage them to talk to a professional and get help
Am I in an abusive relationship? • Does he/she: • Communicate openly when there is a problem? • Give you space to spend time with your friends and family? • Supportive and respectful? • If you answered yes to these questions, it is likely that you are in a healthy relationship. • OR does he/she: • Control where you go, what you wear, or what you do? • Try to stop you from seeing/talking to friends/family? • Put you down/criticize you? • Threaten or scare you? • Hit, slap, push, or kick you? • Force you to do something sexual when you don’t want to? • If you answered yes to any of these questions, your health and safety may be at risk. If you think you might be in an abusive relationship, trust your instincts.
