  2. The End of Napoleon • Treaty of Paris of 1814 restored Louis XVIII, brother of Louis XVI to the throne of France • France got to keep 1792 frontiers including Alsace and Lorraine (remember this for later wars against Prussia and WWI) • France gave up the Rhine Valley and Belgium

  3. But Napoleon comes back • Napoleon’s 100 Days Campaign • Battle of Waterloo • So they need to make a stronger END to all this republican and revolution business

June 9, 1815 • A system of bargains and compromises, giving no one state too much power • Bourbon monarchy restored in France • GB acquired colonies in Africa, and Mediterranean Islands • Holland re-established their monarchy and got control over the mouth of the Rhine • Prussia received 40% of Saxony, some Rhine Valley territory as a buffer from France, and a large portion of Poland • Austria received some territory in Italy (Lombardy, Venetia, Tyrol) • Creation of the German Confederation to replace the Holy Roman Empire • Russia got Finland and a large portion of Poland
