  3. Preparation • What do you think of college? Or what kind of college life did you expect to have before you came here? • What do you expect to learn at college, • more book knowledge or more practical • social experience? • Do you think you will relax after • entering the college or you will study • even harder than in high school?

College • a paradise / Heaven; • a place where you can pursue your dreams; • a place where you are free from your parents’ / your middle school teachers’ strict control; • a place where you can fully develop your abilities according to your own wishes; • a place where you can acquire advanced knowledge, to obtain higher education, to prepare for future work and future life / a place of learning; • a place which provides a new, colorful and relaxing life.

College • a small society where people may confront / face many unexpected problems or difficulties; • a place where you have to learn self-discipline / to learn how to control yourself; • a place where you have to develop new learning methods; • a place where you have to manage your life by yourself; • a place where you have to learn how to live with others.

What a thrill! thrill: a sudden very strong feeling of joy, fear, excitement, pleasure, etc., that seems to flow round the body like a wave • Howexciting it is to go to college! e.g. It was a real thrill to meet the Queen. a thrilling experience Language Points in Para. 1

  14. 5. True, there are an awful lot of people ready to help you, but generally you must take the initiative and seek them out. • awful: adj. e.g. That is an awful lot of money. Sentence Paraphrase: • It’s true that lots of people are ready to help you, but you must take actions first to look for those people. This is to say you cannot wait for other people to help you. Today’s world is full of precious knowledge, whether it be in the arts, literature, a profession, or a vocational skill. • whether it be: whether is should be e.g. Everything around us, be it air or water or stone, is matter. For a rich full life he or she should make use of most of the opportunities at hand. • make use of: use the available in order to achieve something e.g. College students should make use of the opportunities in colleges to improve their abilities. My mother is quite content to see my good marks on final exams. • skim over/through: read quickly to get the main ideas e.g. It took me an hour to skim over the book. Because time is pressing, let’s skim over this part and come to the next one. Language Points in Para. 5

  33. Sentence Paraphrase • Don’t read the courses quickly for “only to pass” in your exam and feel satisfied with it.

By taking the in-depth approach you will be exploring many of the disciplines you will enjoy the rest of your life. • Discipline: an area of knowledge such as history, chemistry etc. that is studied at a university; control gained as a result of training of the mind and body e.g. You are not good at history, so you’d better choose one of the other disciplines. The teacher can’t keep discipline in her classroom. Language Points in Para. 5

Thus, as you stand on the threshold of your college career, commit yourself and stand by that commitment. • on the threshold of / at the threshold of: at the place or point of beginning e.g. You are on the threshold of college life. The government has committed itself to improving the Department of Education. • b. to do sth. wrong or illegal e.g. If you commit a crime you can never escape being punished. To commit a mistake is human.

  41. stand by: be faithful to ( a promise, etc.) You should always stand by your promise. I’m willing to stand by whatever I’ve said.

  42. Sentence Paraphrase • As you have just begun your college life, you should spare all your effort to concentrate on your study and keep your promise.
