  2. How do amimals become endangered? • Humans are largely responsible when animals become extinct, endangered or threatened. Here are some reasons why animals become endangered: • Destruction of Habitat Humans destroy precious habitat--the natural environment of a living thing--when they fill swamps and marshes, dam rivers and cut down trees to build homes, roads and other developments. • Pollution Oil spills, acid rain and water pollution have been devastating for many species of fish and birds. • Hunting and Fishing Many animals are over-hunted because their meat, fur and other parts are very valuable. • Exotic Species When animals or plants arrive into a new habitat from a foreign place they sometimes introduce diseases that the native species can't fight. These "exotic" species can also prey on the native species. http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0906938.html

  3. How many animals are endangered? The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains a list of endangered animals and plants. As of July 2008, 609 animals and 744 plants were listed as endangered or threatened. http://www.govspot.com/know/endanger.htm

  4. Things You Can Do To Protect Wildlife • It is often easy to feel overwhelmed in the face of species loss and habitat destruction. The problem is large and complex—it's common for individuals to feel powerless. Yet, everything we do is vitally important. We may only do a little bit in the grand scheme of things, but together our seemingly small actions add up to a lot. • 1. Protect Wildlife Habitat • 2. Join a Conservation Organization • 3. Reduce the Threat of Invasive Species • 4. Recycle and Reduce Energy and Goods Consumption • 5. Minimize use of herbicides and pesticides • 6. Place Decals on Windows to Deter Bird Collisions • 7. Slow Down When Driving • 8. Change Your Career http://animals.about.com/od/wildlifeconservation/tp/helping_endangered_species.htm

What does it eat? • Problems in the habitat: • Conclusion: This species is endangered because... • What can I do to help this animal? • Draw your endangered species in its habitat.
