  1. The Reconnect Task ForceDiocese of New Westminster

  2. Recommendations • We reviewed and collated the responses and comments made at the Synod in November • We created a Parish Survey and collected and organised the responses • Our task force has the following recommendations for Synod to consider:

  3. Recommendation # 1 The people of our Diocese want to know more about the staff and the operations of our Synod Office. We recommend that an Annual Open House be held at our Synod Office for each Deanery or Archdeaconry.

  4. Recommendation # 2 Create a “fact sheet” to be published each year and distributed at each Synod describing the roles, positions and people of our Synod Office.

  5. Recommendation # 3 Every Parish will appoint one member of their Parish Council/Church Committee to be The Diocesan Liaison. Their role will include: • Receiving the 401 newsletter and Diocesan mailing • Passing along information from the Regional Dean, Archdeacon or Bishop • Keeping the Parish Council/Church Committee abreast of events, workshops, information about our Diocese • Promoting the use of our Diocesan Website

  6. Recommendation # 4 We encourage the newly elected Bishop to send out a monthly letter to the Parish Diocesan Liaisons and to consider a blog, or Twitter feed which will help Parishes to feel connected with the Bishop

  7. Recommendation # 5 Our Diocesan Website needs to be reworked. We heard many comments that it is difficult to navigate. Related to this is that many parishes are seeking help and support with their own websites We recommend that the Communications Committee review our present Diocesan website. We also recommend that the Communications Committee identify volunteers who could help and support parishes create and maintain a website

  8. Recommendation # 6 We heard many times that parishes want to connect more with churches in their deaneries (or in their areas) We feel this is the strongest place of reconnection for us as a Diocese. We recommend that every parish have a Deanery Liaison on its Parish Council/Church Committee

  9. Recommendation # 7 We support the implementation of a review of all Deanery Boundaries and encourage creativity in creating new ones. It is important that we develop ways that our parishes can and will work together

  10. Recommendation # 8 We recommend that every Fall and Spring there will be a Deanery Conference organised by the lay Deanery Liaisons of each parish. This Conference will focus upon: • Developing Deanery community building events (picnics, social events, fun) • Worship and Prayer (pulpit exchanges, praying for and with each other, etc) • Ministry in the area • Workshops • The Bishop and/or Senior Synod Office Staff could attend

  11. Recommendation # 9 We encourage a sharing of “best practices” between churches of Deaneries and between Deaneries. This would be a good topic for a Deanery Conference

  12. Recommendation # 10 We encourage more conversation (at the Deanery and Diocesan Council level) about the location of our Synod Office

  13. Recommendation # 11 • We encourage more conversation (at the Deanery and Diocesan Council level) about reconciliation and healing in our Diocese

  14. Recommendation # 12 We need opportunities for ourDiocese to connect and celebrate: • The Service for the Order of the Diocese of New Westminster could be bigger and more celebratory • Confirmations and Ordinations could be highlighted as events for our whole Diocese • Synod could offer more opportunities for delegates of different parishes to engage and connect • Care + Share needs to be highlighted and “owned” as our Diocesan outreach • The Diocesan Youth Movement should be supported and encouraged • Please add to this list!

  15. We heard a number of suggestions that will be important in the process of electing a new Bishop. Here are a few examples: • The Bishop compose an annual letter for each Vestry Meeting in our Diocese • The Bishop write to each clergyperson on the anniversary of their ordination • Meet with clergy individually on a regular basis • A Renewal of Ordination Vows and Blessing of Oils on the Tuesday of Holy Week • “Bishop’s Friends” seen as important part of connecting within our Diocese

  16. In Your Table Groups… 1. Rank recommendations from 1 to 12 2. The Deanery has been named as an important place of connection. What will you do to aid in that connection and when? 3. Connection does not stop with our Diocese. We are connected to a larger Communion. What will you do to make that connection?
