Mission of Task Force • To serve as the task force appointed by the Bishop charged with directing and coordinating our diocesan relief and development response to the diocese and people of Haiti.
Review of response to date • Received assessment of needs report from Fr. Smith Milien, Archdeacons Bazin and Hobbs following their visits to Haiti. • Determined needs of Haiti will span years and the Task Force will need to continue accordingly.
Review of response to date • Developing plans to keep needs of Haiti before the diocese through continued publicity, familiarization tours and anniversary benefit concerts. • Task Force to serve as an advocate for continued development in Haiti
Bishop’s Haiti Earthquake Discretionary Fund • Total Collected • Total Disbursed • Total Remaining
Review of response to date • Recommended to Bishop that the remaining funds in the Bishop’s Discretionary Funds for Haiti Relief be deferred until Diocese of Haiti recovery plan is in place.
Familiarization Trips • Raise clergy awareness to encourage deeper congregational engagement • Developing options for 2 or 3 day visits • First Trip scheduled for October
Benefit Concerts • Weekend of January 14 – 1 year anniversary of Earthquake • Classical and folks musicians from Haiti to perform at Trinity Cathedral and second location in diocese.
Companion Diocese Resolution • Whereas, the Diocese of Southeast Florida has a longstanding and historic relationship with the people and diocese of Haiti due in large part to the geographic proximity of Haiti to South Florida and to the large number of Haitian-Americans and Haitian immigrants who live in South Florida, and;
Companion Diocese Resolution • Whereas, there has been a long history of interaction, friendship, mission and ministry between the Diocese of Southeast Florida and the Diocese of Haiti, and;
Companion Diocese Resolution • Whereas, the people of Southeast Florida have been greatly moved by the devastation of hurricanes and other political, economic and natural disasters in Haiti, and especially the devastation of the January 12, 2010 earthquake which resulted in tremendous loss of life, injury of people and the utter destruction of Leogane, Port au Prince along with the Cathedral properties and many churches and other diocesan properties of Haiti, and
Companion Diocese Resolution • Whereas, the people of the Diocese of Southeast Florida recognize that the rebuilding and restoration of Haiti and the Church in Haiti will require a long-term and dedicated commitment not merely from the Diocese of Southeast Florida, but also from the wider church and world community;
Companion Diocese Resolution • Be it resolved that the 41st Annual Convention of the Diocese of Southeast Florida affirm its affection for and commitment to the Diocese of Haiti, and
Companion Diocese Resolution • Be it further resolved, that as a sign of this commitment and affection the 41st Annual Convention expresses its desire to enter into a companion relationship with the Diocese of Haiti and requests that this intention be communicated to the Bishop and people of the Diocese of Haiti as well as to the Presiding Bishop and Executive Council of the Episcopal Church for approval.
