Complications due to E. coli infection • The most common complication is called dense hemolytic uremic syndrome. People who have this problem is ill with hemolytic anemia (which refers to the low number of red cells), thrombocytopenia or renal failure. Syndrome is mainly observed in children and can cause acute renal failure, the problem that begins at about 5, to 10 days after diarrhea starts. People who face such problems are advised to go to hospital for care as soon as possible.
