  2. Day 12 • Emergency • Urgency • Security/Safety • Part Two! This topic will take three days.

  3. Review • MAYDAY is for grave and imminent danger. • PAN-PAN (pronounced PAHN-PAHN) is for an urgentsituation. The ship is in danger, but it is not necessarily grave or imminent. • SECURITY (pronounced SAY-CU-RI-TAY) is for a saftey/security warning, such as meteorological events.

  4. New PROWORDS • MAYDAY RELAY • You hear the MAYDAY transmission, and you relay it to the Coast Guard • SILENCE MAYDAY • You demand radio silence due to the MAYDAY situation.

  5. MAYDAY RELAY • MAYDAY RELAY spoken 3 times. • ALL STATIONS or coast station name (as appropriate) spoken 3 times. • THIS IS…(your station’s name) spoken 3 times • The call sign of the distress vessel • Transmit original distress message as completely as possible

MAYDAY RELAY example MAYDAY RELAY MAYDAY RELAY MAYDAY RELAY ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS THIS IS BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRDBLACKBIRD SIX-NINER CHARLIE FOXTROT MAYDAY SWAMPER WHISKEY LIMA THREE THREETHREE HER POSITION IS TWO MILES ONE-TWO-SIX DEGREES TRUE FROM WINDY POINT THREE PERSONS ON BOARD SHE LOST POWER AND THE SEAS ARE ROUGH SHE IS A FOUR-TWO FOOT CABIN CRUISER WHITE HULL WITH BLUE TRIM SHE REQUESTS IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE – OVER.

  7. IMPOSING MAYDAY SILENCE • Repeat the interfering station’s call sign (or ALL STATIONS) three times • THIS IS (your call sign) • Transmit SILENCE MAYDAY three times • End with PROWORD “OUT” • Because NO ONE should answer.

LIFTING SILENCE MAYDAY • Speak MAYDAY 3 times • Address message to ALL STATIONS 3 times • THIS IS…(your call sign) • State TIME in ZULU • Name and call sign of distressed vessel • SILENCE FINISHED (pronounced SEE-LONCE FEE-NEE) • PROWORD “OUT” • We use OUT even though people can start talking again.
