  3. Introduction • Course Series: • COAST GUARD TACTICS, TECHNIQUES,AND PROCEDURES • This course: • RADIOTELEPHONE HANDBOOK • Keep this book after this course is over. • Take it with you on our ship. • It will be useful throughout your career.

  4. Introduction • Skip Chapter 5. • It’s only for USCG. • Parts of Appendix A • Only some words and acronyms are important • We’ll pay special attention to Appendix B • It lists the “PROWORDS” necessary to speak on a radio • Skip Appendix C • Not useful to us. Only for USCG

Introduction • Where do we get radio procedures? • From the five reference books (Ref:) listed in the authorization letter. • All radio procedures are based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) • This course is USCG radio procedure • On commercial ship you will use SMCP • Just a little different • If you can do this, you can do SMCP

  6. Introduction • Radiotelephone is telecommunication by voice • It is the most common way of communicating on a ship • Maritime Public (recreational boaters) may not understand proper radio procedures. • Be patient with them

Notes, Cautions, Warnings • NOTES • Emphasized statement, procedure, or technique • CAUTION • A procedure, technique, or action which, if not followed, carries the risk of equipment damage. • WARNING • A procedure, technique, or action which, if not followed, carries the risk of injury or loss of life.
