  2. Day 13 • Emergency • Urgency • Security/Safety • Part Three! This topic has taken three days.

  3. Urgent Messages (PAN-PAN) • Urgent messages have priority over all other messages except MAYDAY messages. • Initiate urgent message on Channel 16 • But tell listeners to switch over to a working channel once contact is made. • THEN give the urgent message over the working channel.

  4. Urgent Messages (PAN-PAN) • If you hear an urgent message, monitor channel for three minutes. If you hear nothing further, go on with your business. • Urgent messages can be broadcast to a specific station or ALL STATIONS

Urgent Initial Call example PAN-PAN PAN-PANPAN-PAN ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS THIS IS BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRDBLACKBIRD SIX-NINER CHARLIE FOXTROT – BREAK – POSSIBLE COLLISION – LISTEN CHANNEL TWO-TWO ALFA – OUT • Notice: The caller doesn’t expect a response. He expects listeners to change to channel 22A.

Urgent message text on 22A PAN-PAN PAN-PANPAN-PAN ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS THIS IS BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRDBLACKBIRD SIX-NINER CHARLIE FOXTROT – BREAK – LARGE BLACK TANKER APPEARS NOT UNDER COMMAND. IT IS HEADING FOR SOUTH HARBOR BRIDGE. IT MAY COLLIDE WITH BRIDGE PYLON. UNKNOWN BLACK TANKER CHANGE COURSE IMMEDIATELY – OVER.

  7. Cancelling Urgent Message • The tanker heard you and changed course. So, you cancel the urgency message. PAN-PAN PAN-PANPAN-PAN ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS THIS IS BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRDBLACKBIRD SIX-NINER CHARLIE FOXTROT – BREAK – CANCEL URGENT MESSAGE OF 181520Z–POSSIBLE COLLISION- BREAK – THIS IS BLACKBIRD – OUT.

  8. Safety Communications Message • Like PAN-PAN, SECURITE messages must be initiated on Channel 16, but then switch to a working channel.

He expects listeners to change to channel 22A.
