Introduction • “Understanding and developing skills in oral communication are fundamental to all other learning and to all levels of human interaction.” • “Students develop communication competence in interpersonal, group, and public interaction to establish and maintain productive relationships and function effectively in social, academic, and citizenship roles.”

  3. Communication Process • The student demonstrates knowledge of communication as a process for exchanging messages and creating meaning. Importance in daily interaction Communication process Oral language characteristics Nonverbal communication Listening process Communication choices Perception Knowledge, attitude, need, and priorities Culture Responsibility

  4. Interpersonal • The student uses appropriate interpersonal communication strategies. Importance of interpersonal communication Characteristics of effective interpersonal communication Using language appropriately in a variety of interpersonal situations Nonverbal Critical, reflective, and empathic listening skills Participating in conversations Strategies for communication decisions Analyze and evaluate the appropriateness communication.

  5. Group • The student uses appropriate communication in group situations. Groups in democracy. Informal vs. formal groups Basic theories of group dynamics Roles within a group Listening strategies Problem-solving, conflict management, building a consensus Parliamentary procedure Presentation of group discussion for an audience Impromptu contributions in groups Evaluate group effectiveness

  6. Speech Preparation • The student uses appropriate processes and skills for preparing speeches. Analyze audience, purpose, and occasion Apply criteria to choose and limit topics Choose and limit purpose for speech Research topics using a variety of sources Organization of speech Patterns of organization Using logical, ethical, and emotional proof to clarify a point Use appropriate device for introduction and conclusion Use rhetorical strategies Make effective choices for language usage Write manuscript for speech to enhance oral style and facilitate memory. Produce and use concise notes/visual aids appropriately

  7. Speech Form • The student analyzes speech form. Importance of public dialogue in a democratic society Function of traditional elements of speech form Analyze characteristics of speech to inform, persuade, or inspire Analyze oral and written models of speeches as a basis for developing speech skills.

  8. Speech Presentation • The student uses appropriate strategies to rehearse and present. Use appropriate techniques and strategies to overcome apprehension. Use language clearly and appropriately Use nonverbal strategies appropriately Use notes, manuscripts, rostrum, visual aids, or electronic devices appropriately. Demonstrate a lively sense of interaction with the audience.

  9. Speech Evaluation • The student uses appropriate strategies to analyze and evaluate speeches. Analyze and evaluate oral and written speech models Use critical listening skills to evaluate speeches Provide oral or written critiques of his/her own and other’s speeches

  10. In a nutshell… • First we are going to start with fluency because I believe your ability to read with expression underlies your ability to conduct an effective speech. • We’ll then look at some basics of communication. • After that, we’ll transition to historical speeches. • From historical speeches, we’ll work on developing your own speeches. • Then, we’ll focus on group work and dynamics. • Finally, we’ll conduct mock interviews,develop resumes, and discuss other business communications.
