Meet Matt Harper2011-12 House Delegate Matt started his career in environmental health and safety in 2006. Currently Matt is the construction safety officer at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon. He is responsible for developing strategic methods to minimize construction related impacts to healthcare operations. Additionally, he provides health and safety training, services and consultation to OHSU operation and maintenance departments. Matt earned a BS in Environmental Science with an emphasis in Environmental Health & Safety from Oregon State University. He has been a member of the Columbia-Willamette Chapter of ASSE since 2010 and is serving his first officer duty as House Delegate.

The American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation is pleased to present the “2012 Scholarship & Professional Development Grant Program” for students pursuing degrees in occupational safety & health and for ASSE members wishing to advance their professional credentials. This year we are offering nearly $170,000 in scholarships and professional development grants. Applications are due December 1, 2011 and award recipients will be announced on or around April 1, 2012.
Meet Delegate at LargeBILL KNESS Bill Kness, PE, CWRE, is president and owner at Blue Dot, Inc. an environmental, health, and safety (EHS) consulting company. Bill has more than 20 years of experience providing environmental and safety engineering services for clients across the country. In addition to his consulting work, Bill has worked as the EHS engineer at Leupold and Stevens in Beaverton and in the corporate EHS group at Land O’Lakes. Bill has also agreed to manage the LinkedIn group for the chapter. Bill is a professional engineer and a certified water right examiner. He has been a member of ASSE since 2006
Students invited to enter safety video contest • Highlight workplace safety and win cash • “Speak Up!” from the director’s chair and promote young worker safety and health in a 45-second public service announcement. High school students across Oregon are invited to enter the third • annual video contest. The top three entries will take home cash prizes ranging from $300 to $500 and will earn a matching amount for their school. The Oregon Young Employee Safety Coalition (O[yes]), Oregon OSHA, SAIF Corporation, American Society of Safety Engineers, the Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology (CROET), and the DHS-Public Health • Division are sponsoring the contest. • The contest is designed to increase awareness about safety on the job for young people, with the overall theme of “Save a Friend. Work Safe.” Specific video guidelines are outlined in the contest • rules. Students are encouraged to use humor, get creative, and use the message “Speak Up!” while emphasizing ways to protect themselves at work. Submissions will be judged on the following: • • A teen worker health and safety message based on the concept • of “Speak Up!” as the main focus of the video (See rules for • more specific details) • • Creativity and originality • • Overall production value (video and audio quality) • • Youth appeal • The deadline for submissions is Feb. 1, 2012. • Contest winners will be unveiled at a screening event to be announced in the spring, and winning • entries will be posted on YouTube. 2011 Oregon Safety Professional Worksite Grant • This $2000 grant supports projects or activities that will improve workplace health and safety programs for Oregon workers. • Grant Requirements: • 1) may be new or an extension of an existing activity or program; • 2) must focus on an Oregon workplace; • 3) must include a credible project evaluation; • 4) must be innovative; and • 5) must have the potential to be implemented in other workplaces and industries. • Details and application at: http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/research/centers-institutes/croet/outreach/croet-oregon-worksite-awards.cfm. • Applicants must be an Oregon ASSE member in good standing. • Applications are due by June 30th, 2011. • If you have questions with the application process, please send an email to • asse-croet@comcast.net and request assistance.
