Battle of Saratoga: Burgoyne’s army retreats and is surrounded by the Continental army and Burgoyne surrenders • Turning Point in the war: • Britain failed to divide colonies • Foreign nations (France and Spain) feel the Americans may just win the war and begin to help

  2. Foreign Involvement

  3. France Joins • France gave secret aid in 1776 but didn’t become an official ally until colonists’ victory at Saratoga • Promised to send $, supplies, and troops • Attack Britain in West Indies so Britain has to send troops there

  4. Spain Joins • In 1779, Spain also agrees to join the United States • Fought British in the Southwest– Southwest invasion by British now impossible • Spain hoped to gain new land

  5. Foreign Officers • European officers help train colonists • Gen. Marquis de Lafayette: 19 year old French aristocrat who commanded colonists • “Soldier’s Friend” – used his own money to buy supplies for his men • Persuaded the French king to send 6,000 soldiers to America • Took part in French Revolution

  6. Valley Forge • Winter of 1777-1778, Washington and his men camped at Valley Forge because it was near major crossroads and have plenty of wood and water • Washington’s army lacked shoes, food, blankets, jackets • ¼ die • Some desert, but most stay • Women brought shirts and food on New Years

  7. The Army Grows Stronger • German officers helps transform inexperienced colonists into trained soldiers during time at Valley Forge

  8. Valley Forge – Diary Entry • I am Sick - discontented - and out of humour. Poor food - hard lodging - Cold Weather - fatigue - Nasty Cloaths - nasty Cookery - Vomit half my time - smoak'd out my senses - the Devil's in't - I can't Endure it - Why are we sent here to starve and Freeze - What sweet Felicities have I left at home; A charming Wife - pretty Children - Good Beds - good food - good Cookery - all aggreable - all harmonious. Here all Confusion - smoke and Cold - hunger and filthyness - A pox on my bad luck. There comes a bowl of beef soup - full of burnt leaves and dirt, sickish enough to make a hog spue- away with it Boys -

  9. Valley Forge Postcard • Write a postcard as if you are a soldier in valley forge. • Mention foreign involvement • Mention something from p. 208 • The front of a postcard is decorated and colorful, be mindful of what valley forge is.
