Journal Question • 22 Jan 2013 • What are the units for mass, volume, and density of a solid object?
Mass • The amount of matter in an object • Measured in grams (g), milligrams (mg) or kilograms (kg) • Stays the same unless matter is removed or added.
Mass • Use the triple beam balance, and the digital balance to find the mass of ten different objects. • Record the objects, and the mass in your science notebook.
Journal Question • 23 Jan 2013 • Convert 230 mg into grams. • Convert 42.3 grams into milligrams. • Calculate the volume of a cube with each side measuring 2 cm.
Volume • Measures the amount of space an object occupies. • 1ml = 1 cm3 • Milliliters and Liters for measuring Liquids ( ml, l) • Cubic Centimeters for measuring the volume of solids (cm3)
Volume Rectangular Solids • To find the volume of a rectangular solid: • Length x Width x Height • Find the volume of a cubic centimeter. • Find the volume of five other rectangular solids.
VolumeLiquids • To find the volume of a liquid, use a beaker or a graduated cylinder. • Choose a graduated cylinder to find the following volumes of water, and draw a picture of it in your science notebook. • 10 ml, 50 ml, 100 ml, 32 ml, 5 ml
Journal Question • 24 Jan 2013 • Explain (or draw) a cubic centimeter. • Explain density (not units).
VolumeIrregularly Shaped Solids • 1 ml = 1 cm3 • Water Displacement Method 1. Pour water into a graduated cylinder 2. Write down the amount of water 3. Place the object into the water 4. Record the new water level 5. Record the number of ml that the water level changed 6. Change ml to cm3
VolumeIrregularly Shaped Solids • Find the Volume of 10 Irregularly Shaped Objects
Journal Question • 25 Jan 2013 • You can easily reshape a paper clip by unbending it into a straight piece of wire. Would the mass or volume change? Explain.
Density • Density is a relationship between mass and volume. • D= Density g/cm3 • M= Mass (g) • V= Volume (ml) • Mass / Volume = Density
Calculate Density • A rock has a mass of 25 grams. It’s volume is 5cm3. Calculate the density of the rock. • A book has a mass of 500 grams. The volume of the book is 100cm3. Calculate density. • You found a piece of some sort of metal in your back yard. What would you need to do in order find out exactly what kind of metal it is? Explain
Journal Question • 28 Jan 2013 • Write and solve your own density problem. • Share it with your neighbor and solve their problem.
Find the density of some of the objects you measured earlier. If you have volume, find mass and calculate density. If you have the mass, find the volume and calculate density.
