  3. Mauryan Empire (250 BC) • 1st leader – Chandragupta Maurya • Unifies and expands into North India • Put together an army of: • 600,000 soldiers (on foot) • 30,000 soldiers on horse back • 9,000 elephants • To clothe, feed, and pay these troops he levied high taxes

  5. Asoka • Built many roads that resulted in: • Improved condition of older roads • Improved communication in the empire • Build rest houses along the roads

  6. Asoka • His actions demonstrated his concern for his subjects but his policies of toleration and nonviolence failed to hold together the empire after his death

  7. Gupta Empire • Chandra Gupta – was the founder of the Gupta Empire • He came to power through marriage not from winning a battle or invading a country • Fact – he had a network of spies and assassins that would protect him like the modern day things you see in the movies.
