Where Can I Focus on Teaching? • Teaching focused schools • Non-tenure track positions at research schools • Tenure track teaching positions at research schools
Teaching Schools • Most teaching focused positions are here • Do not have Ph.D. program • Might have M.S. program or not • Advertise for vacant positions along side ads for research focused positions • Far fewer than research schools These are just a few examples
Teaching School Expectations • Teaching is the highest priority • Scholarship (research/consulting) still expected • Service to school & professional organizations • Be available to students
Non-Tenure Track Teaching Positions at Research Schools • Several research schools have added non-tenure track faculty to focus on teaching • Ask about the contract length and how renewal will be decided • Ask about the differences in privileges and expectations between the tenure track and non-tenure track faculty
Tenure Track Teaching Positions at Research Schools • At this time, Ohio State University is the only school I know adding tenure track faculty to focus on teaching • Note that the PTR process might take time to adapt to this new type of faculty expectation
Closing Doors In most cases, pursuing a teaching focused position will close the option of research focused positions in the future Research Schools Teaching Schools Industry
Attributes to Emphasize • Professional Engineer license • Practitioner experience • Teaching experience, even as a teaching assistant • Ability to integrate undergraduates into your research plans
