Mammal? • Mammal! • Why, they live in the water, right? • Breathe air • Give birth to live young • Produce milk (nurse their young) • Have hair • Skeleton • Bones or cartilage? • Bones! • Evolved around 33.7 – 23.8 million years ago from a quadripedal, terrestrial animal

General Info, cont’d • Respiration • Gills or lungs? • Whales breathe while moving through the water; they come up to the surface to exhale • There she blows! – Blow is the explosive exhale that we see in the form of a water spout • Voluntary or involuntary? • What happens when you go unconscious? • Whales don’t breathe when they go unconscious, so they suffocate and die

  4. General Info, cont’d • Movement? • How does a fish swim? • How does a whale swim? • The speed comes from the upward stroke of the tail, not the downward stroke!

  5. Curious Behaviors… • Spyhopping • When the animal half-rises out of the water to see the surrounding areas • Lobtailing • Raising the flukes out of the water, then slapping the water’s surface • Acrobatics… • Jumping out of the water and general playing around
