Diet • Jaguars hunt different kinds of prey. • The animals they hunt are: • Monkeys, • Turtles, • Armadillos, • Deer, • Frogs, • Fish, • and wild pigs.
What do Jaguars look like? • Jaguars may be golden, tan, or black. • The fur under the animals’ chin and on its belly is white. • Jaguars are the third largest cat in the world.
A Jaguar’s Family • Baby jaguars are called cubs. • When the cubs are born they cannot see. • Baby jaguars weigh only about 1 ½ to 2 pounds (0.7 to 0.9 kilograms). • By the time the cubs are six weeks old they can see very well.
How strong are jaguars? • Special Body Parts: • Jaguars sink their long teeth, called fangs, into their prey’s skin to catch and hold them. • Jaguars teeth are so strong that its teeth can bite through a bone.
Where do jaguars live? • Jaguars live in parts of Mexico, Central America, and South America. • Most jaguars live in rain forests and wet grasslands but some jaguars live in dry forests. • Jaguars love water. • They are excellent swimmers.
Saving the Jaguar • People need to save their natural homes. • Jaguars are shy animals. They run and hide when humans are nearby. • It is against the law to hunt jaguars in wildlife parks.
