Rationale The rationale of this unit is to have students understand that people live in different parts of the world and that people came to the United States to live from all around the world. This unit is also designed for students to learn that their family members or ancestors lived in other places in the world. Students will also learn why it is important to understand different cultures in the world and how we can live in a multicultural community today. Table of contents

Table of contents Students Activities: • Use the internet for research information on their country of importance and 2 additional countries of their choice • Use the internet to complete interactive activities to enhance their learning in this unit • Use Kidspiration to organize information on their country of origin by creating a concept map • Use Kid Pix drawing and writing tools to create a slideshow presentation and print a copy • Search and print maps and flags of their country of origin • Listen and understand stories shared by teacher about maps, people and food from around the world • Interview a family member about their country of origin and learn more about where their family comes from • Share and present their findings from their country of origin with students presenting orally their Kid Pix slideshow

Table of contents Revisions for Challenged Students • To accommodate challenged students throughout this unit, all activities are recommended to have challenged students work with a partner. This would bring to their small group a variety of strengths from both students. A student with a lower reading level is recommended to work with a student that has a higher reading level. • To accommodate students that may have difficulty writing or filling in the worksheets, student could use more images and phrases instead of complete sentences. Students are also encouraged to use the recording feature/tool within KidPix. • These students are also welcomed to print their necessary information when researching the internet. • For the final activity/project, Kid Pix Slideshow, challenged students are welcomed to create a picture slideshow along with 1-2 words per slide instead of writing in complete sentences.
Student’s Page Introduction: Your journey around the world from your classroom will begin here. Through books, video, technology, and internet resources you will explore and understand different parts of the world. You will also understand what part of the world your family came from as well as how people in other parts of the world may live differently but are in many ways just like you. Table of contents
Student’s Tasks At the end of this unit, you will create a Kid Pix Slideshow Presentation to share with your class about your country of origin and all that it has to offer. You will explore your country of origin and 2 additional countries of your choice to explore how people live around the world. 6 out of the 7 activities in this unit will take approximately one regular classroom period for each activity with access to computers for every activity. Activity 1 can be done at home with a member of your family.

Family Interview Task-You will interview a family member about your family’s country of origin. • Checklist-Complete the interview questions in complete sentences, see worksheet. • Activity 2. . . . My Country of Origin Task-You will research websites provided by your teacher to learn more about your country of origin. • Checklist-Complete all information requested in full sentences, see worksheet. Activities continued… • Activity 3. . . .Countries of Interest Task-You will research websites provided by your teacher to learn about 2 countries of your choice. • Checklist-Complete all the information requested, see worksheet. • Activity 4. . . . Online Activities Task-Explore these three online games to understand more about the different continents around the world. • Checklist-Spend at least 15 minutes on each activity to deepen your understanding, see worksheet. Activities continued… • Activity 5. . . . Concept Map Kidspiration Task-You will create a concept map to organize and outline the important facts about your country of origin. • Checklist-Insert words and pictures to help organize the information from both your interview and My Country worksheets for your slideshow presentation, see attached worksheet. A meeting with teacher will assess this activities progress and outline. • Activity 6. . . . Kid Pix Slideshow Task-You will create a slideshow presentation to share with your classmates highlighting the information your learned in activities 1-5. • Checklist-Complete the storyboard worksheet, extra points will be given for more than 12 slides. Use complete sentences and punctuation. Every slide must have a picture with color and detail for your presentation. See worksheet.
Activities Continued… • Activity 7. . . . Oral Presentation Task-You will present to the class your final Kid Pix slideshow presentation. • Checklist-Your slideshow must contain at least 12 slides from the storyboard with a picture and complete sentences on each slide. • Your presentation will be graded on content, knowledge of your country during your presentation, and basic tools of Kid Pix. • You will be given extra points if you present more than 12 slides and additional information you added to the storyboard.

Conclusion…Expected Outcomes Upon completion of this unit, students in the second grade will hopefully have a better understanding of the world they live in. Appreciating not only their culture, but also the diverse culture that they live in. The hands on activities and technology integrated throughout this unit will support not only the Massachusetts Social Studies Standards but more importantly, support our students living in a multicultural community. This online journey will hopefully deepen students understanding of the world they live in and just how big it really is! Table of contents
