Welcome to the MaLT Scorer/Profiler demo published by Hodder Murray prepared by ReLabs Research Laboratories www.ReLabs.org Exit
What is MaLT? MaLT assessments have been developed by the University of Manchester to provide a set of nationally standardised mathematics tests for ages 5–14. These tests will also yield formative feedback to support individual and whole-class teaching. MaLT tests can be given at the beginning and/or the end of each school year, depending on your assessment purpose. Fully interactive computer-adaptive versions are also available. Exit
Why a new maths assessment? • MaLT brings a genuinely new dimension to standardised testing: diagnostic error analysis enables truly formative assessment in a summative context! • MaLT provides year-on-year tests from Reception to Year 9 • MaLT samples the full maths curriculum – not just numeracy • MaLT gives national norms which are fully up to date Exit
MaLT assessments • are purpose-written to highlight particular errors and misunderstandings which are diagnostic of key learning needs – counting errors, misconceptions with decimals, etc • provide the summative measures of performance needed for screening, monitoring and progress assessment, as well as for individual diagnostic profiling • can be used at any time during the school year • can support schools in moving from paper-and-pencil group screening of whole classes to individually-adapted computer assessment, on an assessment-when-ready basis • are matched to the Numeracy Strategy and Framework for Teaching Mathematics, and standardised nationally on over 12500 pupils, ensuring secure, reliable results • Five good reasons to move to MaLT! Exit
What will MaLT give me? • Summative performance data • Standardised scores and percentiles • Maths Ages (from MaLT Tests 5–11) • National Curriculum levels, subdivided a, b, c • Year-on-year progress and whole-class performance measures • Formative feedback • Pupil ‘performance map’ and individualised error report • Whole-class profiles identifying weaknesses and misconceptions Exit
MaLT year-on-year assessment Ten MaLT tests are available in pencil-and-paper format. Exit
Formative marking and diagnostic feedback Each MaLT test has an optional Scorer/Profiler CD-ROM to make life as simple as possible for the hard-pressed teacher looking for meaningful outcomes. These test-specific Scorer/Profilers enable quick, efficient marking directly on-screen, to capture pupils’ errors as well as their correct answers. Exit
What does the test-specific Scorer/Profiler do? • For each test, the MaLT Scorer/Profiler lets you get the most out of your assessments! • It analyses each pupil’s responses (right and wrong) and provides a complete record of their performance on the test. • It calculates all pupil ages, standardised scores and National Curriculum levels. • It automates diagnostic error analysis, and generates comprehensive individual and group reports. • [For whole-school, year-on-year performance monitoring, using just summative test scores, Primary and Secondary Scorer/Profilers are also available – see at the end of this Demo.] Exit
Pupil details You can import all pupil details – names, dates of birth, gender, etc – from any Excel spreadsheet, or key in individual details directly. Exit
Marking 1 For each pupil, you (or a classroom or clerical assistant) can score the test on-screen to feed that pupil’s answers directly into the computer. The illustration shows a question from MaLT 8. Exit
Marking 2 Alternatively, you can mark the test by hand and then simply import an Excel spreadsheet containing the pupils’ responses. Just match the scores to pupils already in the database, click to import, and their latest results will be available alongside any you’ve input previously. The computer will then score the pupils’ answers, analyse the errors and generate both diagnostic and summative reports. Exit
Diagnostic error analysis Every teacher knows there is more information in pupils’ responses than merely right/wrong. Use MaLT’s fully-featured diagnostic error analysis to uncover response patterns for an individual pupil, full class or a whole yeargroup. Then choose from a range of useful reports … Exit
Reports 1 Individual pupil Performance Map showing any unusual pattern of errors – ‘easy’ questions each pupil got wrong, and ‘difficult’ questions they got right … Exit
Reports 2 Individual Pupil Report giving scores, performance comparisons, feedback at Attainment Target level and individual question level, plus a detailed error report … Exit
Reports 3 Pupil Progress Report comparing current scores with performance on previous MaLT assessments … Exit
Reports 4 Class Report: detailed performance data and formative information relating class to national performance on each question, summarised by gender and by Attainment Target … Exit
Reports 5 Cohort Report comparing two or more classes within a yeargroup, giving a range of useful performance data, including NC levels and class, cohort and national averages … Exit
Reports 6 Class Errors Report relating your own class’s answers to the national averages for each question … Exit
Reports 7 Comprehensive performance listings to let you make the performance comparisons YOU want. Exit
Scorer/Profilers come in two forms • For the class teacher wanting full formative feedback from each test, as well as summative scores: use the test-specific Scorer/Profiler to mark the test on-screen and generate the diagnostic reports illustrated above. • For whole-school performance monitoring, the networkable Primary (for MaLT 5–11) and Secondary (for MaLT 12–14) Scorer/Profilers make sense of year-on-year assessments: simply enter (key in or import) each pupil’s total raw score on the test – you can then open up a comprehensive range of group analyses and summative listings, and track pupil progress. Note that the Primary and Secondary Scorer/Profilers are designed specifically to facilitate year-on-year monitoring: these do not include the diagnostic error analysis or on-screen marking facilities.
