introduction In this lesson we will be learning that: • It’s okay not to know what career you want, but that there are things you can be thinking about already and even doing, to help prepare you for future opportunities The key learning outcomes are: • Students will understand there are lots of opportunities out there for them • Students will understand that they can develop skills even when they don’t know what career they want • Students can identify how their skills and values could help them connect to careers • Students will understand that it’s okay not to know what career they want to do, but that it is always better to be exploring and developing Key skills you will use in this session are: • Communication, self-management, reflection How this will help you with your future career and skills: • You will be able to start developing your skills and knowledge about the world of work early so that you can compete for the very best opportunities when the time comes
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE AS A KID & WHY? Activity In pairs discuss what it was that you wanted to be when you were younger: • Is it still the same today? • If it has changed, why do you think that is? • If it has not changed, do you think it will in the future? Be ready to discuss your answers with the group.
What are your key strengths? Activity • Using the activity sheet provided, write down what you think your key strengths are. • Can you name 5 different careers that require people to have these strengths? • What could you do to develop your strengths further? • Do you have a weakness you think you could develop and turn into a strength?

WASH-UP In the video young people discussed: • How jobs are changing – like having less bank managers – so our ideas of careers we may go into might have to change as the world of work does • That role models can play an important part in your career thinking • That it’s okay to not know what you want to do, but that you can start preparing your skills to match those employers are looking for • That by thinking about what is important to you – like money or travel – may help you narrow down some of the careers that would suit you Activity Complete the reflection sheet to show what it is you have learnt from the session today.
