WOLVES By Samuel Baxter
There are five different groups of animals with vertebrates • These classification are: • Mammals • Reptiles • Amphibians • Fish • Birds
Most Mammals have certain characteristics that make them a Mammal • Here are some attributes: • Hair or fur • Give birth to ”live young” • Mothers nurse there young with milk • Have lungs and need air to breath Mammals that live on land have 4 legs, and have ears that stick out. • Warm blooded
Have you ever had a mammal for a pet? After researching about Wolves, I learned that this mammal has adapted to his environment or surroundings in a variety of ways. You are a mammal! Wolves are a mammal too. Wolves have adapted on earth for a long time.
What Wolves look like • Fluffy fur to keep it warm in cold climates • Brown, black, or gray for camouflage in the forest • White fur for camouflage in the snow • Sharp teeth for ripping meat from the body of the prey • Long legs for running fast to catch it’s prey
Why Wolves howl Wolves howl to communicate or if a member of the pack is lost, he’ll know wear his other members are if they howl to him because he can hear the howls of his members! Isn’t that amazing!
What Wolves eat Wolves eat all kinds of things like deer, elk, caribou, and moose but they eat other smaller mammals and birds. Wolves have sharp teeth for ripping chunks of meat apart to eat.
Wolf details Wolves have big, thick, shaggy fur that is gray, black, and tan as camouflage. They can be disguised and hide from their prey and then sneak up on their potential dinner. They want their prey to run away from them so their prey gets tired and the wolves can catch up. These elk, deer, and rabbits can’t outlast the wolf speed.
What Wolves do Wolves are playful so if you were a wolf then everyone in your pack would be playful, especially the newborn pups. They’re going to attack you but they play with their own kind. This is a behavioral characteristic that teaches the pups how to fight and protect themselves.
How Wolves mate When wolves are mating there legs are stuck together so they have to stay at the base or they will get in the other wolves way.
Hunting • Wolves have strong leg muscles to outrun their prey. • The weak or sick wolf stays home while the rest of the pack hunts and brings it food. • Eat their prey together with their pack
Ending In conclusion, the wolf has adapted to live successfully in their environment. The wolf is an endangered species. We need to help them by not destroying their habitat.
