“Coming Into Language” by Jimmy Santiago Baca Argument Writing Prompt Even though words surround us every day their potential for power is often overlooked. In “Coming Into Language,” Jimmy Santiago Baca discovers “the power of language.” He writes, “Through language I was free. I could respond, escape, indulge; embrace or reject earth or the cosmos.” Write an academic argument in which you briefly summarize the author’s claim and discuss the extent to which language empowers you in your own life. Be sure to develop your argument by using evidence from the text. To support your argument use examples from Baca’s essay and other sources including your reading, school work, and/or personal experience.

How can you help your child in literacy? • Ask your child specific questions about what they read. • Encourage children to read, then write and speak about nonfiction text such as newspapers, magazines, and biographies. • Encourage children to research topics of interest and read series that relate to a central topic. • Have your child follow step by step instructions or a set of directions in order to accomplish a task, such as installing new software or operating a game.
