UNDP-GEF Sustainable Land Management Project Operation from mid 2008 to mid 2012 Designed to increase the capacity of the Seychelles to address various land management issues, including forestry, agriculture, land use planning, invasive species, etc. One of the key components of the project is to strengthen capacity for forest fire prevention, detection and suppression
SLM Project - Forest Fires Ongoing Project Activities (2008-09) • Forest Fire Risk Assessment • Review institutional capacity for forest fire fighting • Update fire contingency plan
SLM Project - Forest Fires Upcoming Activities (2009-2012) • Develop a forest fire prevention and control strategy • Develop institutional capacity for forest fire fighting / Training on: Forest fire risk assessment, prevention, suppression, and implementation of the fire prevention and control strategy • Strengthen the chain of command
SLM Project - Post-Fire Rehabilitation • Research in post-fire rehabilitation of burned / degraded lands (completed) • Training on cost effective strategies for rehabilitation of burned/deforested areas (completed) • Develop and test cost effective methods for rehabilitation of burned degraded lands (2009 – 2012) • Develop guidelines for restoration of burned and degraded areas (2009 – 2012) • Training on best practices for post-fire rehabilitation of burned / degraded lands (2009 – 2012)
SLM Project - Next Steps • SLM project has money for equipment (10,000) and training (20,000). However, these project funds are not nearly enough, so relevant institutions must contribute as well; • Forest Fire Contingency Plan should be agreed upon and binding (signed by all partners), otherwise we will have another plan (like 1997) which is never used/followed; • Joint exercises and training are needed; signed Contingency Plan could be mechanism to support that?; • You have provided effective feedback today, but if you have more ideas, data, corrections, etc., please contact Iris (carolus.iris@yahoo.co.uk), Bruno (bsenterre@gmail.com), or Michel (m.vielle@statehouse.gov.sc) as soon as possible
