The Cold War Continued • NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Had members form both sides of the Atlantic Ocean… Canada/US …Britain/Belgium/Norway • STANFORLANT: Standing Naval Force Atlantic. This was formed to ensure that shipping lanes in the Atlantic remained open. • NORAD: North American Air Defence Command. US and Canada joining together to defend North American air space…basically meant that the larger US air force would protect Canada. Command was stationed in US.
DEW Line: Distant Early Warning Line. A series of radar stations in Canada’s North to detect invasion over the polar cap. Was a joint mission between US and Canada. • STAR WARS: also know as the Strategic Defence System. Introduced in the new space era, in which detectors in space would notify us of incoming missiles and destroy them long before they could land on our soil. • The affect this had on Canadians was that it created jobs. Even in the North…although some would say it was detrimental for the Inuit. Also people were against these programs as it made Canada dependant on the US for Protection.
Korean War • The Korean War is also known as the “Forgotten War” • Canada participated as part of the UN forces. • Contributed 26,000 troops of which 400 were killed and over 1000 wounded • This was a war over Communism. North Korea (communist) invaded South Korea. South asks for aid from UN and we respond. After 3 years no land is gained or lost and results in the creation of a demilitarized zone…still exists today.
Lester B. Pearson • Was Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. He proposed a UN Peace Keeping force that would go into Suez Crisis and keep the combatants apart so that a peaceful resolution could be negotiated. • In four short months he was able to get the leaders of the world to agree and peace was re-established in the Suez region…won the noble peace prize for his efforts. • His idea changed how Canada and other countries of the world could/would act in other crisis in the world.
UN Peace Keeping • Canadian soldiers are well trained • Canada gains prestige or influence around the world • Since we are a middle power this role is more suitable for us and still have an influence in world affairs. • Canadians feel proud that they are acting as good global citizens.
