Thomas Aquinas • Born 1224 • He was born into an aristocratic family in Roccasecca, Italy • Joined the Dominican order • Studied philosophy and Theology • Was a Catholic Priest • Taught in Paris and Rome • Wrote theSumma Theologica • First part on God, second part on ethics, third part unfinished when he died and on Christ • Died 1274
Geoffrey Chaucer • Born 1343 • Born into a prosperous wine merchants family • Was an Author • Wrote “Canterbury Tales” and “The Book of the Duchess” • Also was a poet, philosopher, courtier, and diplomat • Author of the Canterbury Tales, One of the greatest epics • Died 1400
Gothic – A new form of Architecture • Architecture used from 1200 to 1500 • Different styles were used during different time periods • 1200-1300 - Early English Gothic Styles (Lancet) • 1300-1400- Decorated Gothic styles • 1400-1500- perpendicular gothic styles • A way of honoring God by offering him a radiant lit home. • Characterized by large pillars, vertical lines, and spires • Many had stained glass windows and Gargoyles
Flying Buttresses • To prevent the ceilings and walls from buckling • Buttresses helped hold up the arcs used in Gothic architecture.
Gargoyles • Usually a carved human, demon, or animal • Served mainly as decorations
