Welcome to new students • To stand up and introduced themselves • Where they are from • How long have they been in Australia • What they did at home (studied or work) • What work they are doing now • What was the major difference between home and Sydney?
Definitions • Diversity: the stateorfactofbeingdiverse; difference;unlikeness: • Discrimination: is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of people based on age, gender, sexuality, race, religion, disability or marital status • Multiculturalism: the co-existence and contribution of several cultures to the community as a whole

Definitions • Oppression: unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power • Legislation: 1. The act or process of legislating; lawmaking. 2. A proposed or enacted law or group of laws. • Act: An event which occurs in consequence of some principle of law. This is what laws are called e.g. the Work Health & Safety Act 2011
Legislation • Over the past 30 years the Commonwealth Government and the state and territory governments have introduced anti-discrimination law to help protect people from discrimination and harassment. • ‘NSW Anti Discrimination Act 1977’ under ‘Links’ in e-learning portal • Also ‘Australian Human Rights Commission’ website under ‘Links’
Legislation • Age Discrimination Act 2004 • Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 • Disability Discrimination Act 1992 • Racial Discrimination Act 1975 • Sex Discrimination Act 1984
Legislation • The Equality Act 2010 in the UK the existing anti-discrimination laws with a single Act • It simplifies the law, removing inconsistencies and making it easier for people to understand and comply with it • Australia is currently looking at adopted a similar Act
Activity • In small groups select a team leader • Discus with Diversity means to you and what experiences have you had in this area • Also how does diversity differ between your country and Australia? • How has it affected you?
