SDG ‘Global Goals’ Blog Series 1 Howard Hudson, Editor / Communications Coordinator, UNU-MERIT 10 September 2015
Why? “...more resources are being devoted to innovative means of messaging on our website... UNU researchers will also continue to be encouraged to work together across UNU institutes… thus… delivering a truly unique, multidisciplinaryperspective.” 1. Own channels 2. External channels 3. Current partnerships 4. Nascent partnerships
What & When? Global Goals Series 1 - A timely series covering all 17 goals, penned by researchers at 10 UNU institutes and programmes: UNU-EHS, FLORES, GCM, IAS, IIGH, INWEH, INRA, MERIT, WIDER, & ICELAND (GEST, GTP, FTP, LRT) - Daily from 10 September 2015 1. Own channels 2. External channels 3. Current partnerships 4. Nascent partnerships
Basically How? • - A teaser trailer was launched ahead of the series (see left) • - Blogging guides shared by MERIT: 1-page: http://bit.ly/1fUTTc423-page: http://bit.ly/1Lyfm59 • - The twitter hashtag was identified: #globalgoals • - And UN visual assets shared: http://www.globalgoals.org/resource-centre/the-basics/
Exactly How? • Comms focal points identify relevant researchers and work with them to prepare texts of around 800 words. • Each article should have a good (i.e. catchy) title, and the particular SDG mentioned in ‘subtitle’ form. • Texts are then shared with UNU editors (Hudson & Auckerman) two days before intended publication dates. • Posts are published both locally, on institutional websites, and centrally, on UNU HQ, after a slight delay. 1. Why Two Versions? • Two slightly different versions of each text will be allowed (if necessary): one for institutional websites, the other for UNU HQ. • The former can be slightly longer and a little more ‘academic’, the latter will be more tightly edited. • This will ensure a consistent tone and length across all blog posts, and is necessary given the broader audience of UNU HQ. • Overall, more flexibility will enable institutes to ‘control’ their own channels and output , while preventing this timely series from becoming bogged down. 1. What Next? • Global Goals Series 2 • A more substantial series, gathering contributions from all UNU institutes. • To show the full breadth and depth of UNU expertise, via joint (inter-institutional) posts. • Monthly from late 2015 / early 2016. 1.
