Cogeneration power plant by Adrem Invest The biggest co-generation high efficiency power plant in Romania, built in SuceavaInvestment value: over EUR 90 mil Used fuels: natural gas and biomass Thermal energy alimentation of 25,000 residences – 60,000 inhabitants from Suceava Minimal quantity of energy delivered: over 400,000Gcal of thermal energyand 152,000 Mwah of electrical energy Cost for thermal energy and domestic warm water = 116 RON + VAT/Gcal The power plant to be fully functional in winter 2013
Centralized heating • In the context of increasing the sector of renewable energies and smart grids, society must receive concrete benefits from the development of energy sectorCentralized heating, one of the most important benefits. WHY? • is the logical solution having the premises of the rise in gas prices • is the most efficient use of the heating system • is a reliable supply of heat and reduces the risks • is an improvement of labor productivity in power engineering • offers safety and scalability
Context SCALABILITY (x100 more network end-points to manage in real time)
VPP – Virtual Power Plants Household generation with solar panels is likely to become a mass phenomenon (see the case of Germany – almost 10% of houses involved) Poorly predictable renewables (wind, solar) must be integrated in the grid, which is NOT prepared with its current techniques and technologies! VPP – the simple and elegant solution: combine remote generation units both predictable and less predictable in a single virtual entity which is handled by the grid as an unitary sources. The effective internal management of the VPP remains complicated and requires the industry and universities to further develop new technologies and ICT solutions.
Smart Metering • Losses identification and active consumers’ management (with hourly tariffs) require an effective tool to offer visibility to the consumption almost in real time. • Smart Metering enables a wide variety of uses – must take into account that an implementation cost of ~150 - 200 euro / consumer can only be afforded together with flexible solutions that do not pass entirely the cost to the energy tariffs. • Proper telecomm. technologies mix and the physical installation efforts for meters and communication media • Investment efficiency of Smart Metering is attained only when synergies with network control systems (SCADA / DMS) are exploited to provide: • Accurate localization of loss sources (technical and non-technical) by energy and power flow balances at all grid levels (HV – MV – LV) • Faster identification of outages in the LV network and fault isolation • Identification of losses due to phase unbalances • Accurate and auditable measurement and calculation of network reliability indicators (SAIFI, SAIDI, CAIFI, CAIDI) & Assessment of power quality
ICT solutions • Smart Grid is “the Internet of energy” and the ICT solutions for the grid management have to step to a new generation to accommodate the new paradigm. • Concepts like VPP and Smart Metering can only be fully enabled by adapted ICT solutions • Adrem Invest stands as a traditional provider committed to innovation in this field and we feel that our role is to provide our customers with solutions of today for a smooth migration. • E.g., since Smart Metering is not a project to implement in 2 or 3 years, but rather a process, our solutions now integrate seamlessly the manual and automatic meter reading in a single platform interconnected to the ERP system. In this way, painful ERP reengineering works will be avoided by the utilities as Smart Metering advances. The same philosophy we apply in our grid control (SCADA/DMS) projects. • Certainly, it is the entire industry’s role (utilities and providers together) to have an active approach towards Smart Grids and take the steps which we can take now instead of being spectators to the changes of the outside world, which would put us tomorrow in a desperate situation to catch-up.
For an optimistic future in energy sector! • Energy sector must and it will follow the trends applicable to all industries: • Coherent strategy for a sustainable sector development – both public and private companies to be involved • Environmental friendly approach – renewable energies use and environmental & quality management system • Automation – The internet of Energy - increasing efficiency • Technological innovation approach
