  3. Annexation • TX joined Union in 1845 • Dispute over Southern boarder • Mexico – Nueces River • U.S. – Rio Grande (150 miles SW)

  4. War • Gen. Zachary Taylor crossed Nueces • Mexico considered it an invasion • Polk wanted Mexico to fire 1st shot • 3 part strategy • Taylor across Rio Grande • take Santa Fe • advance on Mexico City

  5. Bear Flag Republic • Uprising in CA • Leader – Gen. John C. Fremont • CA named Bear Flag Republic • U.S. troops arrived & took control

  6. Mexico City • Strategy worked as planned • Mexico refused to surrender • Polk sent Gen. Winfield Scott to take city

  7. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo • Mexico gave up 500,000 sq. miles to U.S. • CA, UT, NV, part of NM, AZ, CO, WY • Rio Grande set as TX boarder • U.S. paid Mexico $15 million & $3.25 million in Mexican debts

  8. Manifest Destiny • U.S. now went from sea to sea • Completed with Oregon/Mexican territories • Trade now easier with Asia • Whether or not to allow slavery in the new territories would now be the big question.
