Texas is settled by Americans • 1821 – Mexico declares independence • 1821 – Americans granted rights to settle in Texas • Convert to Catholicism • No slavery allowed • 1825 – 3,500 people (mostly Mexicans) • 1834 – 38,000 people (7,800 Mexicans)
Texas Revolution • 1835 – Texans drive out all Mexican forces • 1836 – Texas Republic is founded • Battle at the Alamo • Battle of San Jacinto – General Santa Anna is captured • Treaty of Velasco (1836) • Santa Anna signs the treaty, but it is not ratified by Mexican government • Ends hostilities • Texas is self-governing • Not recognized as independent by Mexico
Fast Forward to 1845 • James K. Polk elected president on platform supporting Manifest Destiny. • US passes legislation approving annexation of Texas and all of her territory • Texas approves annexation • Mexico sends forces to northern border • Attempts at negotiation fail. • 1846 - Conflict erupts between U.S. and Mexican forces.
Polk’s message to Congress • “...after reiterated menaces, Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil. She has proclaimed that hostilities have commenced, and that the two nations are now at war...I invoke the prompt action of Congress to recognize the existence of the war, and to place it at the disposal of the Executive the means of prosecuting the war with vigor...”
U.S. Advantages • Better technology (rifles, artillery, telegraph) • Better training of officers • War would act as a training ground for many officers of the American Civil War. • Larger population and economy • Captured Mexico City and various other large cities • Naval supremacy
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo • Mexico loses half of territory • Rio Grande River established as border • U.S. pays Mexico $15 million and assumes $3.25 million in debt. • Mexicans in ceded territory given U.S. citizenship
