Battles of the war • Palo Alto • May 8, 1846 • First battle – brutal and bloody • Buena Vista • February 22-23, 1847 • Heavily outnumbered Americans use cannons to defeat Mexicans • Mexico City • September 12-13, 1848 • Ends war because it is the Mexican capitol • Both sides lose thousands of men

  6. Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo • U.S. pays Mexico $15 million in damages and an additional $3 million to Mexican citizens • TX, CA, NV, NM, AZ & CO are ceded to the U.S. • Mexican citizens in the area become Americans overnight, about 100,000 of them.
