Juan Ponce de Leon Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer born in Santervas de Campos. He was a distinguished soldier who had served in the Spanish military, and becamethe first governor of Puerto Rico. He heard Rumors of undiscovered islands Northwest of Hispaniola, wanted to discover them.He also began searching for the elusive fountain of youth. His expeditions were funded by the Spanish government as a reward for his service to the country.
Exploration Route De Leon chose to depart from the Dominican Republic and head towards the east coast of Florida. He then headed south on the warm current called the Gulf Stream, looking for Bimini, where he believed the fountain of youth was located. He brought 200 men to help concur any opposing forces. Although he never found Bimini, he did discover Florida for first time. He set up a Spanish colony St Augustine Florida.
Death While on a search for Bimini, Ponce de Leon’s company ran into Indian warriors. Many men were wounded, including Ponce. He later died from this wound in Havana, Cuba in 1521.
