He heard stories of the land containing fertile soil and gold to be found in many rivers. • He arrived in 1508 but there is actually evidence he made a previous exploration around 1506 • His earlier exploration confirmed the presence of gold and gave him a good understanding of the geography Puerto rico

  5. First voyage to Florida They arrived in 1513 People believe they were in what is now present-day St . Augustine He sailed off shore and came across a strong current, now know as the Gulf Stream Had several encounters with natives

  6. Last Voyage to Florida He returned on a colonizing expedition The colonists were soon attacked by Calusa Braves Its was believed that he was injured by a poison arrow Soon after they returned to Puerto Rico

  7. His passing He soon passed after returning to Puerto Rico He was buried in the crypt of San Jose’ Church Then was later moved to the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista.
