Changes in the US Standard 5.4 E.Q. What changes were occurring in the US as a result of WWI?
Innovations of War • Planes • Used for reconnaissance • Machine gun • Depersonalized killing • Poison gas • Chlorine and mustard gas • Tanks • Used to cross no man’s land
New Weapons • Guns would be refined and change warfare. • Tanks would ran on caterpillar treads and were built of steel so that bullets would bounce off. • By 1917 the British had learned how to drive large numbers of tanks through barbed wire defenses, cleaning a path for the infantry. • Early planes were flimsy and first both sides limited their use of scouting.
Problems as a result of war • Problems included: • Filth • Lice • Rats • Polluted Water • Constant bombardments and other experiences often led to battle fatique and “shell shock” • Term coined during WWI to describe a complete emotional collapse from which many never recover.
Propaganda • Propaganda: discrimination against German Americans; • Calling them “Huns” • Many lost jobs • Refusal to play German music • Some towns changed their names and schools and topped teaching the German language. • United the war effort at the expense of individual liberates.
Ethnic & Ideological conflicts • Espionage & Sedition Act: similar to the Alien & Sedition Act. • Affected freedom of speech because it allowed the government to silence ideas and challenged its authority • Especially labor leaders who wanted better working conditions. • This contributed to the Post War Red Scare.
