  2. History • Many Archaeologists and Scientist alike believe that Africa is the “Mother Land” • Think about “Journey of Man” • The second largest continent and as of 2009 1 Billion in Pop. (per Wikipedia) • 700 to 1800 languages spoken • 54 Sovereign states, 9 territories, 3 states with limited recognition

History • Economy based on trading gold, slaves and ivory for clothes and weapons • Portugal was the first European nation to settle in Africa in the 1500’s • By the early 1900’s Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain all occupied Africa • The economic depression after WWI Europeans relinquished control.

  4. History • Africa was left to create their own political structure • Still deal with inter-turmoil • Remember the Kony campaign of 2012

  5. Geography • North Africa is considered a dry region (Morocco & Tunisia) • West Africa has grassy plains and tropical areas (Nigeria & Surrounding countries) • East Africa is conducive to farming and ranching (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) • South Africa has temperate climate

  6. Religion • Spirituality and Religion are important to tribal society in Africa • 25% of Africans are Christian • 25% of Africans are Muslim • The rest have tribal religions or combine some elements of different faiths

  12. Coming to America • The first Africans brought to America were indentured servants • More than 425,000 slaves were brought to America • Slaves identified themselves with Tribes • Importing of slaves halted in 1807 • By 1830 300,000 were free in the North

  13. Watershed/Turning Point Moments • The Civil War 1861-1865: Emancipation Proclamation, 13th amendment: Slavery illegal • 14th Amendment: Citizenship • 15th Amendment: Right to vote • Brown Vs. Board of Education • Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s

  14. Family • For many African Americans is very important passed down from African Tribes • The extended family and heads of church equally important • Conversation style very expressive and rhythmic • Hugging and kissing is a form of acceptance

Taboos • They do not eat eggs because they believe that it will make child birth difficult and they excite children… Hyperactive • The weddings take place at night during a full moon if the wedding takes place when the moon is not bright it is said to be bad luck. • The brides parents do not show up to the wedding

  16. Common Foods in the Regions • North Africa- growing foods is difficult area relies on herding • West Africa- Fruits and vegetables are more prevalent, mostly vegetarian area • East Africa- Farming and ranching • South Africa- Fruits and vegetables not commonly grown in other areas

Typical Meals • Rural areas- one main meal a day it is usually in the evening. • Most parts- meals have specific rituals hand washing, clapping, and offering of food • Men grow and harvest/women bring fire wood and prepare meals • Men proceed women but no one eats alone • Refusing food is an insult
