  2. Persuasive Techniques • Specific appeals to the logos and pathos of an audience trying to get them to think, feel, act in a certain way • Typically used in advertising and in persuasive speeches or writing Brown Persuasive Techniques

  3. Logos • Appeal to logic • Any type of argument based on facts, reasons, appealing to critical thinking and what “makes sense” to an audience Brown Persuasive Techniques

  4. Pathos • Appeal to emotions or feelings • Creating apathy in the audience trying to get them emotionally invested rather than logically. Brown Persuasive Techniques

  5. Worksheet • Work in your table groups or with a partner to fill out the Persuasive Techniques worksheet • Remember there’s a front and a back! • Use your prior knowledge and the context clues to cut and paste the word banks into the correct blank spot • Raise your hands with questions • You have 10 minutes! Facts/Stats • Using tests, statistics or information that sounds “scientific” to prove that one product or person is better than another “Four out of five dentists recommend Colgate.” OR “73% of Americans believe this Romney will do a better job – can they all be wrong?” Brown Persuasive Techniques

  8. Call to action • Statement usually found near the conclusion of a commercial message that summons the consumer to act. “Click Here” OR “Download Now” OR “Start your free trial today!” Brown Persuasive Techniques

Repetition • Repeating a name, slogan or product over and over in the same advertisement “Save you more at the Room Store” repeated at least four times in the same advertisement OR “He says he didn’t know” repeated over and over about a politician in the same advertisement.   11. Loaded Language • Using diction that carries with it a heavy emotional charge Deadbeat dad vs. financially burdened father OR Torture vs. enhanced interrogation techniques OR  Socialized medicine vs. universal health care Brown Persuasive Techniques

  12. Snob Appeal • Suggesting that association with a person or product can make you special The people who drive Audis wear fancy clothes, live in mansions, or go to great places. Brown Persuasive Techniques

  13. Band Wagon • Convincing us to accept someone or something because of its popularity Everybody’s got an iphone! OR Everyone’s doing it! Brown Persuasive Techniques

  14. Glittering Personality • Using a famous person to try to make you buy or support something or someone Tim Tebow wears Nike clothing, and if you want to be like him, then you should, too! Brown Persuasive Techniques

Just Plain Folks • Trying to show that a person or product is good for “ordinary” people, because a person is “just like you” and understands you An ordinary looking family sits together at a table to eat a Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.
