  2. What is conjugation? • Just a fancy term for “changing the verb.” • The same way you say: • I dance • He dances The French change the verb as well

  3. Verbs come in three forms • There are –er–ir and –re verbs. • This means they end with these letters and that these letters are chopped off. • What remains in the stem. • Then you add endings to them.

  4. -Er Verbs • écouter = to listen to • chanter = to sing • danser = to dance • parler = to speak • jouer = to play • penser = to think • regarder to watch • oublier = to forget

  5. How to conjugate –er verbs • First choose the verb: chanter • Next, chop off the “er”  chanter • Next use the stem for each pronoun  chant • Then add the endings: • Je chante nous chantons • Tuchantesvouschantez • Il/ellechanteils/elleschantent

  6. - ir verbs • choisir = to choose • grossir = to gain weight • obéir = to obey • maigrir = to lose weight • finir = to finish • rougir = to blush/turn red

  7. How to conjugate –ir verbs • First choose the verb: finir • Next, chop off the “ir”  finir • Next use the stem for each pronoun  fin • Then add the endings: • Je finis nous finissons • Tufinisvousfinissez • Il/ellefinitils/ellesfinissent

  8. -re verbs • perdre = to lose • rendre = to give back • vendre = to sell • prétendre = to pretend • descendre = to go down • se détendre = to relax • fondre = to melt • attendre = to wait

  9. How to conjugate –re verbs • First choose the verb: vendre • Next, chop off the “re”  vendre • Next use the stem for each pronoun  vend • Then add the endings: • Je vends nous vendons • Tuvendsvousvendez • Il/ellevendils/ellesvendent

  10. -ger • Manger = to eat • Nous mangeons • Nager = to swim • Nous nageons
