  3. Tonight Parents Will… • Understand their role in the parent community • Know ways they can be involved in their child’s classroom and school. • Understand the role of a student at Lakeview. • Understand the rituals and routines that make Lakeview a successful learning community.

  4. Lakeview Elementary Mission Lakeview Elementary will help students and parents set goals based on clear expectations, teach the curriculum, assess and monitor students' progress, help students provide feedback and appropriate safety nets in preparation for a rigorous middle school curriculum.

  10. Workshop Model • Reading, Writing, Math and Science all follow the workshop model. • Workshop model consists of an opening, work period and a closing.

  11. Workshop Model • Opening – The teacher introduces a topic, skill, or concept to the entire class. This gives the teacher a chance to model her expectations. • Work Period – Students practice the skill while the teacher gives individual or small group assistance. • Closing – Students share out their learning with the whole group. The students become the teacher.

Writing Writing behaviors seen at this early stage include: •Naming of a few actions or ideas in a general way •Developing sense of story sequence •Usage of simple sentences •Attempts the use of conventions such as capitals and ending punctuation •Some high frequency words and C-V-C words are spelled conventionally •Correct letter size and spacing is used more consistently •Overall message is readable

Million Word Challenge • Kindergarten goal is a whole class goal • Continue to track your reading at home on the reading log in the Bobcat Binder • Kindergarteners are expected to read a minimum of 100 books • Reading with your child, reading to your child and your child reading to you all count • We will keep track in class of our class books. The kids will keep track of the books they read in class. • Kick off in October, but books count starting now.

  20. Conferences • We will schedule a parent/teacher conference with all of our parents in October between October 3rd – 11th. • Teachers will contact you to set up a conference via volunteer spot. You’ll choose the time based on a schedule. • If you would ever like to meet with us just let us know and we are happy to meet with you.

  23. Destination Imagination • Creative problem solving program. • DI teams are coached by parents • We are looking to expand our teams • We need parent volunteers • We will have experienced coaches to hold workshops to work with new coaches

  24. ReportCards • Parent Conference for all students the first 6 weeks • Will come home every 6 weeks with a progress report every 3 weeks • NO report cards or progress reports the first 6 weeks!

  25. Discipline • Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red • If students go to yellow they can earn their way back to green. • Students will get to visit the Treasure Chest or another reward system. • Please initial behavior calendars every day • If you have questions about your child's color ask your child first.

  26. Lunch • Visitors are now welcome for lunch with your child. Please sit at the guest table with your child. If your child is not ready to eat with you and then separate please wait until they are ready. • Please work on your child eating within a 30 minute time frame and cleaning up after themselves. • Snacks – Please send in one small healthy snack such as goldfish, raisins, string cheese, etc. Sport water bottles only for snack time.

  27. Birthdays • Store bought cupcakes or treats at 2:15. Please no cookie cakes. • No peanut products • If invitations are to be passed out through the school we can only pass out to the whole class. • Please include paper products as needed

  28. Supplies • Sport Bottles with snap lids-not frozen (spill proof). • Headphones are preferred for technology. • Bring or wear tennis shoes every day for recess and PE. • Sweater or lightweight jacket for inside the classroom. It gets pretty chilly.

  29. Student of the Week • Poster - All About Me Poster and/or All About Me Book to share. • Stinky Feet – Tuesday take off your shoes in class all day • Secret Show and Share– Due Wednesday with 3 written clues • Cool Cat in the Hat – Thursday wear a hat in class for the day • Pet Shop- Friday bring small stuffed animal
