Tonight Parents Will… • Understand their role in the parent community • Know ways they can be involved in their child’s classroom and school. • Understand the role of a student at Lakeview. • Understand the rituals and routines that make Lakeview a successful learning community.
Lakeview Elementary Mission Lakeview Elementary will help students and parents set goals based on clear expectations, teach the curriculum, assess and monitor students' progress, help students provide feedback and appropriate safety nets in preparation for a rigorous middle school curriculum.

Remind 101 • Remind101 is an app that allows teachers to text our parents about important reminders. • We do not see your number and you do not see ours. • You will text a message to a certain number. Each 2nd grade teacher has a different number and message. • We have handouts with directions for each teachers Remind101 group.

Workshop Model • Reading, Writing, Math and Science all follow the workshop model. • Workshop model consists of an opening, work period and a closing.
Workshop Model • Opening – The teacher introduces a topic, skill, or concept to the entire class. This gives the teacher a chance to model her expectations. • Work Period – Students practice the skill while the teacher gives individual or small group assistance. • Closing – Students share out their learning with the whole group. The students become the teacher.

Reading & Writing • Reading level should be 28 or higher by the end of the year. Writing stage should be between 6 and 8. • Language Arts Big Idea Taught in 2nd Grade: Details convey meaning directly and indirectly. • What kinds of detail make the main idea clear? • What kinds of detail create sensory images? • What kinds of detail convey ideas that are not directly stated? • What kinds of text features convey meaning directly or indirectly? • Conventions to secure • Homework - Read each night for approximately 20 minutes. Practice spelling and sight words using the monthly activity sheet and/or on spellingcity.com.
Spelling • New word list each week. • Word work practice/skills block practice for 30 minutes a day. • Spelling test on Friday. • Test is given as dictation sentences. • First grade words and new second grade words are counted, usually 20 – 25 words.
Million Word Challenge • Discuss how your grade level will track • You may wish to insert your reading log • Discuss grade level expectations • On-level books are what counts • You may wish to also show tracking charts • The kick off will be in October, but books count now.

Conferences • We will schedule a parent/teacher conference with all of our parents in October. • Teachers will contact you to set up a conference. • If you would ever like to meet with us just let us know and we are happy to meet with you.
Homework • The purpose of homework is to reinforce concepts that have already been taught in class. • Homework should not be difficult for students because it is just practice. • Explain your homework expectations at your grade level even if you already explained.

Destination Imagination • Creative problem solving program. • DI teams are coached by parents • We are looking to expand our teams • We need parent volunteers • We will have experienced coaches to hold workshops to work with new coaches
