  3. Europe Show Up • Dr. Livingstone • Scottish Minister • Explored Africa • Sent stories to England • Disappeared…. • H. M. Stanley • American hired to find Livingstone • “Dr. Livingstone I presume?” • Found him in 1871

  4. Belgium takes the Congo • Stanley is hired by the King of Belgium • King Leopold II • Explores territory and claims it for Belgium • The Congo is 80 times the size of Belgium • Leopold exploited the Africans through forced labor, taxation, and abuse • Rest of Europe joins in

  5. Forces enabling Imperialism • External and Internal forces contribute to Europe takeover of Africa • External – Europe’s advanced technology, machine guns, steamships, RR, cables. Cure for malaria • Internal – Variety of African cultures and low level of technology • Many countries wanted a piece of Africa

The Berlin Conference 1884-1885 • Held by Otto von Bismark • 14 European countries meet to prevent war • Created rules for dividing up Africa • Show by map and occupy • Notify others in Europe • Start from coast and go inland • 1900 all of Africa taken except Ethiopia and Liberia • Ethiopia defeats Italy • Liberia started by American slaves

  7. Tensions Rise • Germany wants to control East and West • Britain wants North to South • Others are caught in between

  8. Fashoda Crisis • Britain controls Egypt and the Nile • Needs the Sudan • France also wants the Sudan • Both send in troops then France backs down • French people not happy with Britain

  9. Boer War • Dutch (Boers) take control of South Africa or Cape of Good Hope • British take over colony (1800s) • Cecil Rhodes • Englishmen who wants to build a railroad from Egypt to South Africa • Gets rich off diamond mines • Starts Rhode Scholarship • Creates country of Rhodesia

More about the Boers • Boers upset at the British and blame them when outsiders try to take over their land • Boers defeated easily as British set fires that destroy the countryside • First modern “total” war = Boer War • African farmers left without homes and jobs • Have to work in the mines to survive • Europeans start to hate British
